THE GOVERNMENT HAS AMBITIOUS PLANS TO TRANSFORM PHUKET INTO A TOP-TIER GLOBAL TOURISM DESTINATION

According to a report by www.nationthailand.com, the Thai government is poised to make significant investments aimed at transforming Phuket into a premier global tourism destination. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has shown a strong commitment to this initiative, marked by repeated visits to Phuket and Phang Nga, including a recent visit on September 29. This visit follows closely on the heels of a prior one from August 25-26, underscoring the urgency of propelling multiple high-budget projects intended to position Phuket as a global city and a beacon of prosperity in the Andaman region.

The Provincial Development Plan for 2023-27 envisions diversifying Phuket’s economic base beyond its traditional reliance on tourism, which was starkly highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic when the region saw a drastic reduction in income as tourism numbers plummeted. In contrast, 2019 figures showed Phuket welcoming 14.5 million international tourists, generating substantial revenue. The strategic shift in focus from dependence on tourism is evident in the plan’s seven core objectives, which include establishing Phuket as a culinary, health and wellness, sports, and educational hub, enhancing digital and marine tourism, and setting up a regional tuna processing and trading center.

Specifically, the government has approved a 5.1 billion baht budget for the Andaman International Health and Wellness Centre project, a collaboration involving local educational and medical institutions. This project aims to promote wellness tourism and expedite economic recovery and development.

Further, infrastructure development is critical to these efforts, with Prime Minister Srettha actively overseeing the advancement of significant infrastructure projects, including the “new city – Koh Kaew island – Patong tunnel project”, and expansions at Phuket International Airport, Krabi International Airport, and the new Phang Nga International Airport. These projects are designed to enhance the handling capacity and efficiency of the region’s transport infrastructure, supporting the broader goal of sustainable economic growth for Phuket and the wider Andaman area.
